JOB PISTON

"13:33 SUNSET"

New York-based artist and art director Job Piston creates a live-broadcast video installation imbedded in an immersive environment designed by bicoastal architecture firm Charlap Hyman & Herrero (CHH).

For this new work, CHH and Piston dove into material from the Light and Space Movement, the multifaceted history of twentieth century immersive installations and multi-sensory environments, and consumer culture references stemming from a variety of social media hashtags shared through direct messaging. For ‘Lake Feed (in the Gloaming),’ CHH and Piston construct an enveloping, tactile chamber dedicated to the broadcast of a seemingly picturesque Mulholland Dam, better known as Lake Hollywood, hidden under the shadows of the Hollywood sign.

The installation is structured by a 12-minute score mixed in collaboration with New York and Los Angeles based-experimental music producer Nar Angel Rokh (recent tracks include Mykki Blanco and Fenty Beauty). Weaving Chopin with avant-garde composers and vocals from Madonna’s 1998 Ray of Light, the track bends and twists our natural sense of time.

Each day the exhibition is open, the time of sunset is posted to denote the beginning of the 12-minute sunsetting cycle. Participants are encouraged to gather inside for the countdown into the gloaming.

WHAT DREW YOU TO FLUTTER?

I have always had the desire to frame iconic images of California light with a built spacial experience. It was also an opportunity invite my friends Charlap Hyman & Herrero help engineer the architecture of the room.

HOW DOES ART MAKE PEOPLE-AND YOU- HAPPY?

Art is a permissive space to explore new forms and ideas as well as reclaim aesthetics.

WHAT DOES 'PLAY DATE' MEAN TO YOU?

Play date is an appointment to loose your sense of time.
